Italy and the Bel Paese
This book explores the commodification of nature with a particular emphasis on how this process is perpetrated by capitalist societies.
Through the example of Italy, the book presents another lens to observe landscapes and natures and the different actors, both human and non-human, involved in their production. It draws on critical geography perspectives to unveil the socionatural dynamics that form the basis of the commodification of Italian natures. It examines how the social construction of nature in Italy produces peculiar effects on ecologies and landscapes as well as on human and non-human bodies, and how alternative socionatures emerge.

Il volume ha l’obiettivo di riflettere – secondo una prospettiva geografica – sull’interazione tra le politiche di conservazione/patrimonializzazione della natura e del paesaggio e le pratiche di valorizzazione/fruizione degli stessi. Conservazione della natura e del patrimonio, gestione e trasformazione sostenibile del paesaggio e fruizione turistica o ricreativa di prossimità sono quindi i tre ambiti che questo testo aspira a intrecciare, osservando in particolare i contesti italiani individuati come Riserve della Biosfera Unesco. Il volume è introdotto da alcuni capitoli teorici che mettono a fuoco le principali questioni affrontate: il superamento del binomio natura-cultura nella sfera della conservazione, il paesaggio come laboratorio dinamico e come strumento di lettura delle questioni sottese all’individuazione dei valori patrimoniali del territorio, le pratiche informali di costruzione del patrimonio e il rapporto tra il patrimonio stesso e le comunità che lo abitano. Il testo propone inoltre un’analisi geografica e una mappatura di tutte le 21 riserve della biosfera istituite in Italia fino al 2025, così come affondi tematici derivanti da approfondimenti ed esplorazioni di alcuni casi studio specifici. Infine, il testo è arricchito da quattro contributi internazionali, i quali aiutano il lettore a inquadrare ulteriormente le principali questioni teoriche alla luce del dibattito internazionale e interdisciplinare. Il volume si rivolge a tutti coloro (studenti, ricercatori, esperti, tecnici e professionisti) che si occupano dei temi del patrimonio e della conservazione. È utile per approfondire alcuni aspetti legati all’istituzione e gestione delle riserve della biosfera e per trovare spunti di riflessione utili per interpretarne il significato attraverso il contributo delle scienze umane e sociali.

Abstract
Yellowstone is globally recognised as the world’s first national park, but the depth of its meaning goes beyond the history of nature conservation. This paper presents the park as an assemblage of landscapes, memories and popular environmental discourses. It interweaves the debate around Yellowstone as a landscape idea with an analysis of its representation in popular culture, from The Yogi Bear Show to the more recent Yellowstone television series. Coupled with personal and subjective memoryscapes, the Yellowstone assemblage is presented as capable to inform the global debate on the role of protected areas, especially in relation to climate change, tourism and recreation, as well as matters of natural heritage kinship and belonging.
